More than 180,000 people celebrated LGBTQ+ equality and diversity in Taipei on Saturday (October 26) at east Asia's largest pride parade. The streets of central Taipei were packed for the annual parade, the 22nd since it began, with participants from around the world clad in rainbow-colored attires as they walked and danced along floats. Soar Lin from Taiwan, who attends the parade every year, said he hopes to spread awareness of the importance of LGBTQ+ rights. Taiwan Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim led the ruling Democratic Progressive Party delegation, marching behind a banner reading "Be Yourself". Taiwan legalized same sex marriage in 2019 in a first for Asia and is a bastion of tolerance and liberalism in a region where the rights of sexual minorities are often either suppressed or outlawed.
