Taiwan loses first ally post-election as Nauru goes over to China
Taiwan has lost another diplomatic ally, just two days after William Lai won the presidential election. The small Pacific Island nation of Nauru has severed relations with Taipei to re-establish formal ties with Beijing. Nauru said it would no longer recognise Taiwan as a separate country, but as an inalienable part of China. That leaves just 12 countries with formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Meanwhile, the US has reaffirmed its commitment to the island as "rock solid". Taiwan said the timing of Nauru's decision appears to be part of China's retaliation against Saturday's elections.
