Parading the streets with flags and chanting atop captured U.S. military vehicles, Taliban fighters and hundreds of Afghans celebrated in Kabul on Wednesday to mark the third anniversary of the Islamic militant group’s return to power in Afghanistan. On Aug. 15, 2021, Taliban officials declared the end of its two-decade war with the U.S. after Western forces abruptly withdrew. One week on and the Taliban had seized control of the entire country, pushing out U.S.-backed President Ashraf Ghani. Since the takeover, Afghanistan has slowly plunged into economic crisis, with no foreign government bodies formally recognizing or supporting the ruling Taliban. The majority of Afghans continue to grapple with issues like poverty, drought, and malnutrition. The fading hope among women for a decisive role in the country's future is an ongoing concern, too, with United Nations officials and international leaders condemning the increasingly strict rules and restrictions against Afghan women.
