Tech founder calls for ‘accountability’ amid Meta’s fact-checker removal

Tech Policy Design Centre Founding Director Professor Joanna Weaver said there “has to be accountability” amid Meta’s move to remove US fact-checkers. “We hold government accountable via elections, we don’t really have this mechanism to hold these big platforms to account,” Professor Weaver told Sky News Australia. “I think we’re increasingly seeing demand for legislative mechanisms to hold these companies accountable in ways that don’t quash innovation.” The professor says there is scope for Australia to “move forward and learn from the US” and other countries will be looking to see how Australia responds to US legislation.
