Rio Tinto Alcan, has for years branded itself as Canada's biggest producer of green environmentally friendly aluminium. With massive government subsidies, it is developing "carbon-free" aluminum which will feed growing demand from companies like Apple and electric car manufacturers like BMW and Audi. We looked past the company's public relations campaign and followed the chain of production from the Amazon rainforest to the slag heaps in Quebec's Saguenay region. What we discovered was a manufacturing process that is far from green. Deforestation and water pollution threaten communities in Brazil. Whistleblower testimony and documents we obtained reveal the true operations of the company, uncovering numerous cases of toxic spills and explaining why Rio Tinto remains one of Quebec's worst environmental offenders.
