The relics of war: Why unexploded bombs are still found across Europe to this day
A shocking discovery in Paris on Friday, March 7 brought the city to a standstill, after an unexploded bomb from the Second World War forced authorities to suspend high-speed train service to London and Brussels and shut down roads in the area. Since then, French police have successfully defused the nearly 1,000-pound artifact, but it still serves as a reminder of the lasting impacts of war. The half-ton explosive was found between the train tracks leading to Gare du Nord station – which serves 700,000 passengers a day – in the Seine-Saint Denis region on Paris’ northern border. Alex Souchen, an assistant professor at the University of Guelph’s Department of History, joins Global News to talk about the reminders of war still being found in Europe to this day.
