“The Syrian people are one!”: Crowds celebrate across country after Assad regime ends
Syrian rebels seized the capital Damascus on Sunday in a lightning advance that sent President Bashar al-Assad fleeing to Russia, after a 13-year civil war and six decades of his family's autocratic rule. Following the regime’s collapse, jubilant Syrians celebrated on the streets across the country; chanting, dancing and waving flags. “The city of Damascus has been liberated, the tyrant Bashar al-Assad has been toppled, and all the unjustly detained persons from the regime’s prisons have been released,” Syrian rebels announced on state television. “Long live a free and independent Syria for all Syrians of all sects." “For years, we have been waiting for this day; we have been resisting, we have been enduring, we have been holding on, and we have been waiting for this day,” said Nathalie Homsi in Aleppo. “And finally, the regime has fallen! From now on, the Syrian people are one!” Assad, who had crushed all forms of dissent, flew out of Damascus for an unknown destination earlier on Sunday, two senior army officers told Reuters, as rebels said they had entered the capital with no sign of army deployments.
