3D printing technology is transforming the hospitality industry in Marfa, Texas, where the world's first 3D-printed hotel is being built. The project, led by El Cosmico owner Liz Lambert and Austin-based ICON, aims to expand the existing 21-acre hotel and campground by 40 acres, adding 43 hotel units and 18 residential homes. The innovative construction features curved walls and unique designs by Bjarke Ingels Group, made possible through ICON's advanced Vulcan 3D printer. This printer uses a proprietary cement mixture called Lavacrete, tailored for strength and durability in various weather conditions. While the technology promises creative construction and faster building times, projected at six months for the units starting in March 2025, it raises concerns about job displacement for skilled laborers. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2026, with hotel rates between $200 and $450 per night, and residential homes starting at $2.29 million. ICON is also developing a 3D-printed neighborhood near Austin and collaborating with NASA for lunar construction.
