“There is no dictatorship” in Belarus, President Lukashenko says
Speaking to university students in Minsk on Friday, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko shot down longstanding Western depictions of his ruling style, claiming that “there is no dictatorship” in Belarus and that “there can’t be.” “In order to be a dictator, you must have the levers of dictatorship. And what levers of dictatorship do I have?” Lukashenko said, later referring to Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler, who he said everyone was “afraid” of. As a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lukashenko has consistently offered support to Russia in its war against Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
