“This won’t help”: Kyiv residents divided on Ukraine military request to draft 500,000 people
Residents of Kyiv shared mixed reaction to the news that Ukraine’s military has requested to mobilize between 450,000 and 500,000 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the announcement on Tuesday during a press conference. He claimed he would “need more arguments to support this idea” — suggesting the appeal has not yet been approved or denied. Without enough equipment for new troops, some suggest a mobilization “won’t help” amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, while others believe it might be a good idea to form a reserve of personnel. "The people's motivation is dying out. If some are forced to fight against their will, our army won't be as motivated to fight," one resident said. Funding for Ukraine has recently been held up in both the U.S. and European Union (EU) as a result of political division. Zelenskyy, however, says he is certain that the funding will soon continue and is even expecting a 50 billion euro aid package from the EU.
