Toxic smog chokes India’s capital as pollution hits record levels: “like chili powder in the eyes”
India’s capital remains choked by a toxic smog as pollution levels in New Delhi have hit record levels. On Wednesday, Delhi said it had ordered half its government staff to work from home and temporarily shuttered schools to prevent pollution-induced illnesses among residents. Meanwhile, residents questioned whether the government was taking the necessary steps to prevent pollution in the capital from worsening. “In the coming years, the pollution in Delhi will get so much worse,” said Vivek Kumar, a Delhi resident. “We have seen no measures are taken ahead of the pollution season and when the pollution levels rise, the governments start blaming each other.” Swiss group IQAir on Tuesday ranked New Delhi as the most polluted city in the world.
