Trudeau makes housing announcement in New Brunswick | LIVE
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to make an announcement regarding housing affordability in Saint John, N.B., on Wednesday. The federal and Atlantic provinces’ housing ministers have been discussing ways to boost more factory-built housing for the East Coast, as the region’s population keeps rising at a rapid pace. On Monday, following a meeting in Halifax, the ministers announced that a new chapter would be added to the federal housing design catalogue. The chapter will be specifically tailored to the Atlantic region, considering the region's regulations, climate, and available materials. The pre-approved designs will provide a more efficient and cost-effective solution for housing in the area. In response to increased criticism over the high cost of living, which is partly caused by rising home prices and rents, Ottawa has turned to factory-built housing as a solution. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has estimated that by 2030, an additional 3.5 million housing units will be required to begin addressing the issue of housing affordability.
