U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is facing mass backlash from world leaders and the Nordic population after he expressed an avowed desire for the U.S. acquire the Danish territory of Greenland when he re-enters the Oval Office. Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. needs Greenland for “economic security," further suggesting “people really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it.” In response to Trump’s suggestions, Greenlandic Finance Minister said “Greenland is not for sale” during a press conference in Copenhagen Wednesday. “And I can reiterate that it will never be up for discussion. It is our country, and it is us who will decide on our future,” he added. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken critiqued Trump, saying “[The U.S.] gets better results when we're working closely with our allies, not saying or doing things that may alienate them.” Trump’s comments came as his son, Donald Trump Jr., privately visited the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk in a private Trump jet.
