The newly-formed bipartisan task force in charge of leading a probe into the assassination attempt on former U.S. president Donald Trump, spoke after a visit to the site of the attack in Butler, Pa., on Monday. It was composed of 13 lawmakers, and those with significant military or law enforcement experience. Chairman and Republican representative Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania said that it was the “difference between day and night” to walk the grounds of the physical site and observe the layouts of the space in person. Kelly added that the goal of the task force is “to restore the faith and trust and confidence the American people have to have in our system.” Meanwhile, task force member and Democratic representative Jason Crow of Colorado highlighted the rarity of the unanimous bipartisan support to establish the committee. “I think that sends a very strong message that you don't have to be a Democrat or a Republican or an unaffiliated to say that there's no room for political violence in America,” Crow said. The task force, which was approved last week by a 416-0 vote on the U.S. House floor, will take the lead of the investigation with at least four different congressional panels. The task force will have subpoena power and will attempt to answer a myriad of questions about the day of the attempted assassination of Trump. In the aftermath of the July 13 shooting, the director of the Secret Service, Kimberly A. Cheatle, resigned.
