After news broke that United States president-elect Donald Trump remarked during their dinner at Mar-a-Lago on the weekend that Canada could become the United States' 51st state and that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would become the governor, Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc downplayed the comment Tuesday. LeBlanc, who was present at the dinner, said Tuesday that "In a three-hour social evening at the president's residence in Florida on a long-weekend of American Thanksgiving, the conversation was going to be light-hearted." LeBlanc added that Trump was "telling jokes... teasing us. It was, of course on that issue, in no way a serious comment. We had a discussion on trade issues, border security that was very productive." "There was a warm, cordial relationship," LeBlanc said.
