“Truth needs to be told”: Artist behind residential schools monument shares its meaning

Celebrated Kwakiutl First Nation artist Stanley Hunt has carved massive totem poles and other works to great acclaim around the world. But he says the work to be unveiled Monday at the Canadian Museum of History for this year’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which honours the lives of Indigenous children sent to residential schools, is close to his heart. “The truth needs to be told for all of Canada,” he told The West Block’s Mercedes Stephenson. Hunt shares the meaning behind his emotional artwork, and what his hopes are for Monday’s national day of remembrance.
