Typhoon Shanshan: Planes abort landing, travellers stranded as transit suspended
Despite being downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Friday – shortly after its landfall in southern Japan – Typhoon Shanshan’s impact is being felt by most tourists and commuters as planes in the region are struggling to land, or being diverted, while trains and bus services are being suspended. Sheltering at the entrance of a rain-lashed, deserted shopping mall near Fukuoka's train station, university student Kokoro Osoegawa was among many struggling to get home. While travellers from abroad trying to get home were left stranded in the area without any solutions. “We have been busy trying to find our way home,” a tourist from Taiwan told reporters on Friday. “We were informed [on Thursday] that we had to refund our flight tickets and book another flight, so we were very worried and upset because we didn’t know what to do,” she added. Bringing gusts of up to 112 km/h, Shanshan pummelled a coastal city on Friday and is actively travelling northeast. The slow-moving storm is projected to bring high-speed winds, intense waves and torrential downpour to central and eastern regions, including Tokyo, this weekend.
