Typhoon Yagi: Death toll reaches 22 as Asia’s strongest cyclone hits northern Vietnam

A day after battering southern China, typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday, bringing torrential downpour and winds of dangerous speeds. The super typhoon is being classed Asia’s strongest in 2024, and has killed at least 18 people between China and the Philippines within the last week. An additional four were confirmed dead and more than 75 injured in Vietnam after wind speeds topped 160 km/h on Saturday morning — leaving many struggling on their daily commutes. Despite easing from the maximum recorded wind speeds of 234 km/h in China, Yagi’s intensity has resulted in operations at four airports across Vietnam being temporarily suspended.
