Typhoon Yagi makes landfall on the Chinese island province of Hainan forcing the evacuation of 400,000 people. The country's meteorological service recorded winds of around 245 kilometres an hour near its centre. The weather system has doubled in strength since it moved across the Philippines, killing 16 people at the beginning of the week. Typhoon Yagi registers as the world's second-most powerful tropical cyclone of 2024 - after Category 5 Hurricane Beryl in June.
