Uganda landslide: At least 20 dead, 100+ missing as search for survivors continue
As locals, authorities and Red Cross workers continued their search and rescue missions after a deadly landslide hit Uganda’s Bulambuli district on Wednesday, more than 20 residents have been found and confirmed dead, while the search for more than 100 others continues. After unusually heavy rainfall since October, widespread flooding and landslides have been spread in eastern regions across the African nation. In Bulambuli, Red Cross officials say roughly 45 households have been completely buried, and many others partially damaged. The Ugandan government has directed people living in impacted districts and landslide-prone areas to relocate, though a local council member says not enough is being done by the prime minister’s office. “[Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja] told us to prepare our people. I mobilized them. They have been coming to my office telling me, 'Chairwoman, we have prepared our luggage to move. When are you relocating us?' But I have no answers,” Bulambuli local council member Annet Nandutu said.
