This week on Monday marked a significant milestone for Uganda, as Ministry of Works officials signed a $3 billion deal, or approximately 10.9 trillion shillings, for an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction tender with Turkey’s Yapı for the construction of the much-vaunted Standard Gauge Railway. The EPC tender is for the 272 km Malaba-Kampala route, with construction expected to start next month and a completion timeline of 48 months. The date is a bit unrealistic considering that nothing ever goes according to plan in Uganda. However, after being left in the cold by China’s Exim Bank on financing the project, insiders told NTV that this time around, the government is taking a shot at the project on its own by copying and pasting the Tanzania model of pooling the 10 trillion shillings Capex from multiple sources.
