UK farmers protest: Thousands gather in London denouncing changes to inheritance tax exemption
More than 10,000 British farmers gathered in London on Tuesday to protest changes to an inheritance tax exemption announced by the federal government in October. In what Conservative MPs have dubbed the “tractor tax,” the proposed legislation would disallow farmers with land worth more than £1 million from passing down their farms to their children tax-free. Beginning in 2026, children who inherit land of that value would be slammed with a 20 per cent tax. The National Farmers’ Union says abolishing the tax exemption would be a “hammer blow to farming families,” damaging the industry, and ultimately threatening food production in the U.K. Many farmers have already threatened to strike over the change, or disrupt the food supply chain. Among the protesters was newly-appointed Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, and beloved TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, who since 2021, has starred in ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ — a show documenting the star’s own agricultural endeavours.
