UN Security Council ceasefire resolution on Israel-Hamas a good but belated step, says expert
On Monday (Jun 10), the UN Security Council passed a United States resolution welcoming a ceasefire proposal announced by President Joe Biden that the US says Israel has accepted. Hamas welcomed the resolution, saying it is ready to cooperate with mediators over implementing the principles of the plan. The resolution is a "good step" in general, said Dr Mohammed Abu-Nimer, professor at the American University School of International Service in International Peace and Conflict Resolution. However, he told CNA’s Asia First that it should have been passed in previous votes before the war evolved into "nine months of massive killing and massive destruction".
