Well-known undertaker Roland Tay has been fined $12,000 and ordered to pay about $530,000 in penalties for tax offences. He pleaded guilty to four charges relating to income, and Goods and Services taxes. The 77-year-old had made incorrect tax returns across three years, resulting in tax on income of over $250,000 being undercharged. Investigations also found that he failed to register for Goods and Services Tax that would have amounted to over $280,000. In mitigation, Tay's lawyers cited his poor health. They also said he was lowly-educated with no knowledge of financial matters and had entrusted the bookkeeping for some of his business to an employee. Aslam Shah reports.
