Update on start of sugar harvest
The Portvale Sugar Factory in St. James is up and the start of the sugar crop could get underway this week. The update from Government's Senior Economic Advisor, Ambassador Dr. Clyde Mascoll came during Q100.7FM's radio call-in programme, 'Let's Talk About It'. He revealed tests have been conducted and the factory, once farmers can provide canes, will commence grinding and making of sugar. Ambassador Mascoll cautioned about casting blame on who is responsible for the start of the crop. Ambassador Mascoll says Government over the years has been spending in excess of 30 million dollars in the industry. With the industry now privatised, he says this will be the last year Government will provide funds of $20 million for the purchase of cane.
