US elections 2024: Harris’s loss in Georgia further narrows path to victory
Georgia had been a main centre of hope for Democrats, after US President Biden won the state in 2020. It was the first time a presidential candidate from the party had won in Georgia since 1992. There were reasons for optimism, including shifting demographics and a large, highly mobilised Black population. But with the AP calling the state for Trump just minutes ago, those hopes have been dashed – and Harris’s path to victory has narrowed. After also losing North Carolina, she could still win the White House – most directly by winning Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. While those states are still counting ballots, they appear to be trending towards Trump. A less orthodox path could be through winning Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin and Nevada. Al Jazeera’s John Hendren reports from Gwinnett County near Atlanta, in the swing state of Georgia.
