US hit by blizzard conditions, freezing temperatures amid major winter storm

The first major snowstorm of the year swept into the U.S. mid-Atlantic states Monday morning, impacting tens of millions of Americans nationwide. The system that already caused chaos in the Midwest brought blizzard conditions and freezing temperatures to the East Coast. About five inches fell in the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. Monday, and up to eight inches in surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia, the U.S. National Weather Service said. Governors in several states, including Kansas, Kentucky, Arkansas, West Virginia and Maryland have declared states of emergency. The storm left more than 33,000 homes and businesses in the central and southern U.S. without power.
