U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned Tuesday amid intense backlash over the assassination attempt on former U.S. president Donald Trump. In the wake of her resignation, politicians on both sides of the political spectrum said it was the right decision. “I’m glad she did the right thing,” said U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson. “We have to rebuild the American people’s faith and trust in the Secret Service as an agency. It has an incredibly important responsibility in protecting presidents, former presidents, and other officials in the executive branch. And we’ve got a lot of work to do.” Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman said her resignation was “necessary,” adding that he was “appalled” at the little information she offered during her testimony to Congress. "There is a void of information that is filled by disinformation and conspiracy theories that increases the risk of additional political violence," Goldman added. Cheatle, who had served as head of the Secret Service since August 2022, had been facing growing calls to resign and several investigations into how the shooter was able to get so close to the Republican presidential nominee at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Following her resignation, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has appointed Deputy Director Ronald Rowe as acting director.
