Vanuatu locals live in tents out of fear in aftermath of deadly 7.3 quake | ABS-CBN News
Locals in Vanuatu said on Thursday (December 19) they were living in tents due to fears of damaged buildings, two days after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed at least 16 people. Port Vila local Cynthia, who did not provide her surname, said some locals like her are living in makeshift tents because their houses are not safe anymore. “We stay here for this time being, until everything is finished, and then we can go back to our places,” she added. International search and rescue teams have joined teams in the search for survivors in the rubble in the capital Port Vila. Access to the city was restricted and residents were urged to comply with a curfew as heavy machinery dug through collapsed buildings. In Brisbane, Australian tourists evacuated from Vanuatu on military flights expressed how lucky they were to have survived the earthquake. “We all got out with a couple of bruises, but people passed away,” said Chantal Omara.
