Latin American governments and U.S. president-elect Donald Trump lambasted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro amid reports opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was detained and later freed on Thursday. Chile's President Gabriel Boric stated that "In Venezuela today, those who oppose the government are being persecuted, and the government of Nicolás Maduro has become a dictatorship, a dictatorship that also stole the last elections, and in Venezuela today, there is no freedom." U.S. President-elect Donald Trump defended people taking part in protests against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, saying in a post on Truth Social that "These freedom fighters should not be harmed." Meanwhile, the United Nations' Human Rights Council on Friday condemned recent arrests in Venezuela ahead of President Nicolas Maduro's inauguration for a third term, adding that they constitute an attack on the rights and freedom of the Venezuelan people.
