Venezuela's former opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González has fled into exile in Spain. The surprise departure was announced by Venezuela’s Vice President on Saturday. The exit of the 75-year-old came a week after Venezuelan authorities issued an arrest warrant for him, accusing him of conspiracy and other crimes. The government says it granted González safe passage to help restore political stability in the country. After arriving in Madrid on Sunday, González sent out a voice message of hope to his supporters, “I trust that we'll soon continue the fight for liberty and the return to democracy in Venezuela.” Venezuela has been facing political turmoil after opposition parties challenged President Nicolás Maduro's victory in the July presidential election. González is considered by the opposition and several foreign governments as the legitimate winner of the election.
