The issue of Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio took centre stage at one point during Tuesday’s U.S. vice presidential candidates debate, with the debate becoming so contentious that at one point moderators were forced to turn off the microphones of both Republican JD Vance, and Democrat Tim Walz. Springfield, Ohio, dealt with bomb threats for two straight days in September after the city was catapulted into the international spotlight when former president Donald Trump pushed a narrative, without evidence, about Haitian migrants during a presidential debate with Vice-President Kamala Harris. Vance refrained from pushing the pet-eating claim during Tuesday’s debate, but he doubled down on allegations that “illegal immigrants” are overwhelming Springfield’s infrastructure. That prompted a retort from the debate moderator. “Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status,” CBS moderator Margaret Brennan said. Vance immediately protested the interjection. “Margaret, the rules were that you weren’t going to fact check,” he said, kicking off a fracas which eventually saw both candidates have their microphones muted by the debate moderators.
