For the tenth consecutive month, the war in Sudan — between national armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — rages on and threatens the lives of children nationwide, according to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). The situation has become so dire that “700,000 children are likely to suffer from the deadliest form of malnutrition this year,” UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said during a UN press conference on Friday. Elder said 3.5 million children are projected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition, which reportedly makes children 10 times more likely to die from diseases like malaria and cholera. UNICEF provides Sudan "ready-to-use therapeutic food” (RUTF), a life-saving food item that treats severe wasting in children under five years old. Due to a lack of funds collected in prior appeals, however. UNICEF is seeking approximately €780 million to help more than 7.5 million children in Sudan. The ongoing violence has devastated Sudan's infrastructure, prompted warnings of famine and displaced millions of people across Africa.
