War in Sudan forces thousands to rely on community kitchens as hunger crisis grows

In Omdurman, many displaced Sudanese people wait in lines to receive food, a necessity due to the conflict between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. This fighting has displaced numerous families and taken away sources of income, forcing many to rely on community kitchens for their meals. Before the conflict, more than half of working-aged Sudanese were employed in non-formal sectors. Now, lack of access to these jobs and increased food costs due to limited supplies in markets have left many unable to feed their families. Aid agencies report over 40% of Sudan’s population facing hunger. Community kitchens, like Khartoum Kitchen, provide essential daily meals, easing the needs of civilians affected by the conflict. The government supports these initiatives, as their capacity to provide aid is extremely limited. The ongoing fighting continues to increase the number of people in need of food supplies.
