An asteroid lit up the sky over parts of Cagayan province past midnight Thursday, just hours after being discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey. Karen Bea, a resident of Barangay Mareda in Santa Ana town, said she was able to capture video of asteroid 2024 RW1, which turned into a fireball at 12:39 a.m. outside her house. Resident Allan Madelar in the nearby town of Gonzaga also captured the rare phenomenon. A video of the asteroid taken by Valiant Aniñon of Lal-lo, Cagayan showed the asteroid “burning bright into a greenish 'fireball' over Lal-lo, Cagayan around 12:39 AM PhST”, according to ScienceKonek. Another video taken by Marvin Coloma showed the asteroid lighting up the sky of Tuguegarao City for a few seconds. The asteroid also lit the sky over the Pinacanauan River in Tuguegarao City, in the video taken by Dennisson Macalan. “Based on ground reports we have received, the short-duration brightening of the sky was observed as far south as Metro Manila and CALABARZON, but the best shots of the fireball were mostly from Cagayan Valley,” ScienceKonek said in a Facebook post. The International Meteor Organization said this is only the 9th time in history that an impactor or an extraterrestrial object is discovered before its entry to the earth's atmosphere. The European Space Agency said that the asteroid's impact with the earth's atmosphere will be harmless. However, meteorites or parts of the asteroid may reach the ground or ocean. Northern Luzon remains affected by the trough or extension of Typhoon Yagi, which wreaked havoc in the country as Enteng.
