After meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida over the weekend, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith told Canadians “we have to be prepared” for incoming tariffs on Canadian imports once Trump re-enters the Oval Office. For several weeks, Canada's top politicians have attempted to convince the Republican leader not to follow through and impose the 25 per cent tariffs he threatened in December. However, with the recent resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, concerns have hit an all-time high. Without a dedicated figurehead to fight for the nation, Smith highlighted her own efforts with Trump and members of his incoming administration, suggesting Canada could establish a “tariff-free relationship” by leveraging the countries’ mutual benefit on energy. "We've all seen the biggest irritant to the U.S. are trade deficits, which they believe they have. I don't believe they have a trade deficit when you take out energy,” Smith said.
