“We were living inside a nightmare”: Syrians express relief as Assad regime ends
Despite the uncertain circumstances of Syria’s new governing power after rebels seized the capital Damascus, citizens and refugees alike are celebrating the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s five-decade-spanning reign. “We were scared, terrified and living a nightmare, as if we were inside a big prison,” Idlib resident Mohammed Zaher said on Monday. “God has granted relief to everyone.” So long as they see a positive change, many refugees expressed excitement to return home after initially fleeing the country during its 13-year civil war under al-Assad’s oppressive regime. "I can't describe the feeling - it's a dream, a dream we haven't woken up from yet," said Nadir Shalan, a Syrian from Damascus.
