Wells run dry in India as scorching heatwave and poor infrastructure worsen water crisis
Wells are running dry in India as a scorching heatwave with temperatures over 45 degrees Celsius sweeps the country. Women in affected villages must collect water by hand daily. The water level in wells has fallen, forcing reliance on government trucks for water refills. Water is also being diverted to major cities, worsening the local crisis. Despite local pleas, the water crisis is expected to worsen due to increasing demand and unsustainable groundwater depletion. Al Jazeera’s Imogen Kimber reports. Ranjan Panda is the convenor of the Water Initiatives Network in India. He joins us from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha to discuss this.
