The Western Cape health department started the year with a budget shortfall of about R1.5 billion. This is a result of national government’s budget cuts. The shortfall is impacting service delivery and the ability to fill vacant posts. The department says the National Equitable Share Formula decreased the percentage allocated to the Western Cape. This, is despite the increase in the province's population and its rising burden of disease. eNCA's Ayesha Ismail caught up with Western Cape Health and Wellness MEC, Nomafrench Mbombo, and brings us this story.
