Sabina Shoal, the latest flashpoint between the Philippines and China in the disputed South China Sea, is located about 75 nautical miles from the Philippines' west coast and 630 nautical miles from China. Gregory Poling, director of the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative at American think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, tells CNA’s First the site does not hold strategic value, and instead has a “certain symbolic importance”.
