What pushes Chinese fans to the extremes as they pursue their sporting idols?

The first stop of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2024 will be taking place in Shanghai from Oct 18 to 20. Among the swimmers descending on the city are China’s very own Olympic stars. Of late, some of these sporting idols have fallen victim to fan mobs that are seemingly more chaotic and crazed than those going after the country’s entertainment stars. CNA’s Tan Yew Guan finds out what’s pushing these fans to the extremes, and what can be done about it.
