Whooping cough: What's behind Canada's surge in cases?

Thousands of cases of whooping cough have been reported across Canada this year, with more than 12,000 reported nationwide — far surpassing the approximately 3,000 annually seen between 2015 and 2019. Doctors note there has been a decline in vaccine uptake, but said there may be more than just not enough people taking the vaccine that is behind the surge, including waning immunity. There's also questions about whether changes to the vaccine formula in the late 1990s, which led to far fewer adverse events, may also have led to a vaccine requiring more boosters to strengthen immunity.
