Why I want to arrest Myanmar’s military leader | Close Up

26/11/24
Al Jazeera English

In this episode of Close Up, we get rare access to western Myanmar, where the People’s Defence Force (PDF) is rising up against the rule of the army that seized power in February 2021. Despite being far less armed and funded than the military, these fighters - mostly volunteers including students, doctors, activists and army defectors - remain determined to bring freedom to the country. We meet Zike, a former school teacher now training to become a police officer with the rebels. When asked who his first arrest would be, he replies with a smile: "The most wanted man in Myanmar," referring to the man who leads the country’s military junta. "I put my trust in this revolution," he says, driven by hope for a better future. Like others, Zike dreams of returning home to his family in a free and democratic Myanmar.
