Work ongoing to formulate Marine Spatial Plan
The Barbados Coastal Zone Management Unit has taken another step in gathering information to help formulate the Barbados Marine Spatial Plan. The plan, which is supposed to be drawn up by 2027, required the gathering of information about the blue economy of Barbados and associated parts. Over the last two weeks, data analysts have been conducting the first ever Cetacean Survey in Barbados where they looked at some of the species that are in the territorial waters around the island. Director of the CZMU Dr. Leo Brewster says gathering information like this is very important, not just for knowledge purposes but in knowing what limitations there are when looking at all avenues for the blue economy. He also stated that the survey allowed for them to confirm the passing of mammals such as whales and dolphins through Barbadian waters. Dr. Brewster says he also believes that surveys like these will need to be done periodically moving forward.
