Wrecking In Port of Spain Resumes - City Police Focus On Key Areas And Vehicle Retrieval
Wrecking operations have resumed in Port of Spain, with City Police and other officials actively enforcing the law. After initially restarting on May 24th, the Port of Spain City Corporation temporarily halted the service due to mechanical issues with the wreckers. However, Superintendent of City Police Glen Charles confirmed that these issues have since been resolved by the Vehicle Maintenance Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (VMCOTT), and wrecking resumed on November 25th. "We want to ensure that when the wreckers are on the road they are roadworthy you know because sometimes the boom, we want to ensure that the boom, the lift, is working you know properly because sometimes it could cause damage to vehicles and that might cost the State some additional expenses." He said currently they are concentrating their efforts on Ariapita Avenue, St. James, and downtown Port of Spain. They are also attempting to operationalise an additional location for motorists to retrieve their vehicles. "Right now they are being taken to the Dock Road, right by Ana Street Extension but we trying to fix a site around by South Quay you know that so the vehicles that were impounded in the Port of Spain district we could take them there for more ease for the public in terms of retrieving their vehicles and so on." Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne noted officers of the City Police will also be on patrol throughout Port of Spain and they can issue Fixed Penalty Notices. "So that we acquired additional machines from the ACP Municipal Police in order to do ticketing. Weveral of our officers have received training how to do that and so the Superintendent of Police leading the City Police Service will engage in that activity on an ongoing basis." Mayor Alleyne added that during the Christmas season, various community groups have requested permission to utilise public spaces and receive additional support. He said the City will continue to provide support in whatever way they can.
