Sanaa's streets are filled with decorative flags and lights in the days leading up to the birthday of Islam's Prophet Mohammad. The anniversary, which is celebrated widely across Yemen, also creates an opportunity for street vendors selling decorations, who often see an uptick in their sales. One such vendor, Akram Haidar, sells flags, scarfs, and car decorations ahead of the event. Haidar says he enjoys both the spiritual aspects of the event as well as economic benefits. “We celebrate the blessed Prophet's birth - we celebrate it before anything else because he was the final prophet, and second, because it represents a season for us to make livelihood," Haidar said. The streets of Sanaa come alive during this time, as buildings, mosques, and light posts are adorned with flags and flickering lights. The Bab Al-Yemen gate, a historic landmark, is also decorated for the occasion. Houthi activists, like Mohammad Abdullah, can be seen decorating their cars with flags, stickers, and lights. “This occasion is considered the greatest celebration and the biggest holiday for the Yemeni people, because we are in need of such an occasion at the present time," Abdullah said. As the sun sets over the city, the lights and decorations illuminate the streets, creating a festive atmosphere in the war-torn country. Mawlid al-Nabi, the birthday of Islam's Prophet Mohammad is usually marked with celebrations by Muslims around the world. Cities are often decorated, and many people hand out sweets and candy to children.
