Yeonpyeong Island residents react to escalating tensions between North and South Korea
Residents on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong are living in heightened fear, frequently finding themselves in the line of fire with North Korea. Tensions are increasing along their shared land frontier and maritime border. Recently, South Korean soldiers fired warning shots after North Korean troops crossed the border for the second time this month. Fishing near the maritime border with North Korea adds to the hazards, with GPS jamming by the North posing significant risks. Memorials on the island commemorate past incursions and deadly shelling incidents. Bomb shelters, once chained shut, are now unlocked and ready for use.
